There are billions of searches performed via search engines every single day and when looking for something it's Google, Bing and the like that people turn to first. SEO is about making sure that when people are looking for something on the internet, it's you they find first.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is the process of making websites appear naturally higher in search engines. There are numerous techniques to achieve this but ultimately it's about making your website relevant to particular search phrases that people use.

There are two forms of SEO: 'white hat', which is recognised by the search engines as legitimate and 'black hat', which uses techniques that are frowned upon and may even see your site banned from the results pages. At Carl Hancock Marketing, we only use white hat techniques.

Keyword Analysis

Keywords are the what people type into search engines in order to find the results they are looking for. Keyword analysis is about working out what these keywords are. Once the keyword analysis has been performed, SEO is then the process of ensuring that your website appears high in the search engine result page when these keywords are searched.

Copy Writing

You'll always need copy for your website i.e. the stuff people read. Copy writing is the process of producing this, but is also essential in terms of SEO by ensuring that your keywords are used within that copy.

Link Building

In the world of SEO, link building is the process of having other websites link to your own. Search engines tend to see links as recommendations, so the more you have the better. However, you cannot arbitrarily place links anywhere or buy them as this is can be seen as a black hat technique.

To do link building well is time-consuming, but the rewards are significant. One of the simplest methods is to publish press releases and articles online, which can have links back to your website. These can include anchor text where your keywords actually form the link.

Good Content

Good content is an element so frequently forgotten in SEO, but is as essential as anything else. Search engines wouldn't remain popular if they didn't deliver good results to the people who use them. If someone types 'how to play guitar' then the search engine will be wanting to deliver sites that do exactly that.

You can have the best SEO in the world, but if you lack good content and your site isn't relevant to what people are searching for, you'll never get very high in the search engines.
